This 3-day class is designed for officers, investigators, criminalists, firearms examiners and others with little or no experience in the investigation of shooting incidents. A review of basic firearms- related topics is given to insure all participants have a fundamental understanding of the principles necessary to conduct a proper investigation/reconstruction of a shooting incident. Students are introduced to the tools, equipment and techniques that are used in the reconstruction of a shooting incident. Techniques introduced during lectures are further developed through extensive use of hands-on exercises. Case studies add additional facets to the lecture topics. While lecture is critical to understanding why something occurs, attendees will also learn how to develop skills in angle of impact determination, use of trajectory rods, interpretation of blood stain patterns, interpretation of bullet holes in various media, determination of direction of force for glass fractures, revolver cylinder determinations, ricochet phenomena and gunshot residue interpretation.
