Today, more than ever before, forensics are playing a major role in criminal investigations. With highly successful television programs such as CSI and its counterpart, CSI Miami, not only are the courts expecting more from police departments, but so is the average citizen that watches these shows. It is also that average citizen that sits in the jury box. Even though individual officers may have taken some fingerprinting and crime scene courses, rarely does a department create a forensic unit. Money is always an issue, but we are the police, and there is an expectation of us. This 3-day workshop will teach students how to begin creating an effective small and medium-sized agency forensic unit. It will describe and discuss the nine major areas of the process, the necessary steps involved - in detail - that will assist an agency committed to developing the best possible forensics for their community by providing a blue print for students to follow through the process of creating an effective Forensic unit.
